Current projects

  • Shapeshifter. The strange life of John Hampton Christison, Professor of Dancing.
The life of John Hampton Christison could quite easily be construed as a work of fiction. John was a remarkable man in many ways and was typical of his era in others. His fortunes foundered many times as he navigated the difficult waters of 19th century commerce and the passage of his life was marked by dramatic changes in occupation. Like many in colonial societies John was not averse to claiming a status in life above that accorded him within the restricting social structures of Great Britain. Time and again he claimed a past that exceeded his humble roots.
  • Pride of the Valley. The Lithgow Valley Colliery and Hermitage Colliery 1869 to 1979.
A joint project with Bill Marshall. The history of the Irondale, Boldon and Main Range Collieries from 1873 to 1930. Also the story of the community that developed around the Irondale pit head.
  • Black Diamond. The history of the New South Wales Western Coalfield.
This massive project will chronicle the story of coalmining on the western lip of the Sydney Coal Basin. This story commences in 1813 and extends into the present day. Volume I will cover the period from 1813 to 1932.
